The Slip D Rig- What is it and How To Tie It…
The Slip D Rig has been around for a number of years; having caught a large number of carp throughout the UK and Europe, this rig is extremely versatile and can be used in a number of different presentations, from using with small pop-ups to fishing on the deck with wafters. This presentation isn’t as suited to using with straight bottom baits, due to where the hookbait lies on the rig, which can often end up closer towards the hook eye, which with a bottom bait will make the rig less effective.
Unlike a traditional D rig where the hooklink material is fixed in place on the shank using generally a stiffer material, the ‘Slip-D’ allows for movement up and down the shank, with the doubled over section being formed from softer braided material to allow for this movement.
See below for the steps on how to construct this rig; take note, it can also be used for shorter supple rigs inside solid PVA bags and in conjunction with most coated braids on the market.
Firstly trim off around 40cm of coated braid.
Using a stripper tool remove 10cm of the coating on the braid, revealing its soft inner
Double the uncoated section over and pass it through the front of the eye on your chosen hook.
Pass a micro hook ring swivel onto the doubled up sectioned pass the loop of the doubled over section over the point of the hook
Adjust the size of the loop to desired length, opposite where the barb would be is perfect.
Tie a 7 turn knotless knot and trim off your shortest tag end close the the eye.
Your rig should now look something like this with around 3/4's of an inch uncoated.
Place a piece of shrink tube over the eye on your hook that is around half an inch long.
Add a anti tangle sleeve to the other end of the rig.
Adjust the rig to your desired length and tie a figure of 8 loop knot.
Using a puller tool, tighten down the knot gently.
Trim off your tag end and carefully steam your shrink tube, ensuring not to hold the braid near to the naked flame.
Attach your chosen hookbait and your finished rig should look like this.
